The DigInt website is being updated

So… I use WordPress for a bunch of various work and nonprofit projects.

WordPress is… a pain in the you know what.

In fact, I would say that WordPress is the CMS that I despise working with the most, were it not for every single other CMS that I have ever used.

It also (as opposed to a site with mostly-static pages) takes more site resources, requires a database, endless patching, themes and plugins that sometimes work with each other and sometimes don’t, the workflow is marginal, futzing with captchas and trying to outwit spammers, Gutenberg is such a disaster I have to install a plugin on every single WordPress site I use just to disable it entirely so things stop breaking… I could go on.

The final straw on my own sites was when the latest major release came out, and the audio player plugin I was using didn’t come along for the ride – breaking every single audio player link I had on the site. That was the point where I decided, if I have to go back and mess with every single post on the site, it wouldn’t be all that much more effort to port it over to a different system, with a better workflow and no databases whatsoever.

Anyway, the tl;dr is that I am developing a new website for DigInt. If you want to take a look at the work-in-progress, you can view it here.

This is also why I haven’t been posting more music here, although I have a number of tracks pending upload that I have worked on over the past year. I don’t want to add something new that I will then have to port over, so new material will be showing up on the in-progress site version. Once I have the archives ported over and new music posted, that site will replace the WordPress version.

If you have any questions or comments on the new site, please use the new site’s contact form to get in touch with me.

Do Bop

I was going through my collection of random royalty-free sample bits and bobs that I’ve accumulated over the years, and came across this one particular random 25-second-or-so snippet of something relentlessly upbeat and “pop”-y, and I decided that I had to see what would happen if I effectively mangled it beyond all recognition.

First, I took the snippet and put it through Hourglass, stretching and glitching it through a couple of different randomizations, making the results the two “main” channels of the track, processed through various effects.  To that I added an instance of Cataract performing a random walk through a selection of the original clip, both stretched versions and another sound source I happened to have on my desktop.  There’s also an instance of the track processed through Granulizer to create the underlying noise bed, and an instance of Lancinantes to provide the additional central drone that ties it all together.  It took a while to balance all of the different tracks, but I think it comes together into a reasonably focused and meditative soundscape (well, meditative for me, at least).
